Going into my grade 12 next year I have completely picked my courses to fulfill the prerequisites for university programs. Having a passion for Biochem has unfortunately landed me with no spares and a handful of tough math courses. Most of the requirements are understandable like calculus and physics. However, I was honestly appalled to see english on the list. English has never been a course I worried about performing well in because I assumed it wouldn't matter going into science. However, seeing how the topic of this post brings this issue to my attention again, I took some time to objectively look at the facts. After doing so, I have to agree that grade 12 english should be a prerequisite for all university programs.
First and foremost, regardless of the subject, in university you must be able to express yourself through writing. It's no secret that university entails writing essays, public speaking and having group discussions. These are all skills honed in a grade 12 english class, which in my opinion, is the biggest reason why it should be mandatory. Whether it's from instrumental music to astronomy, you need these skills to articulate your thoughts and ideas to peers and professors Not to mention, the critical thinking and analyzation skills you have to apply regularly in grade 12 english are also essential in a university setting to perform well. The ability to draw unique conclusions and read between the lines is vital in any topic of study. Academic papers and peer review are proof of this fact. Overall, the opportunity to really sharpen important thinking and communication skills is why I believe that grade 12 english should be a prerequisite for all university programs.
